Indirect Calorimetry In Sports Nutrition PracticeNew technology has made Indirect Calorimetry available to Sports Nutritionist and there clients.
Click here for information on Metabolic Assessment or VO2 Testing. Metabolic Assessment:
Korr Medical Technologies, has introduced the Reevue, an affordable, lightweight, and accurate device for metabolic measurements that is tailored specifically for nutritional assessments. The portability allows sports nutritionists to easily move from client to client, doing multiple tests each day. The simple one key operation and auto calibration allows any technician to use it without special training. And the accuracy is the same as the expensive, bulky metabolic carts of the past. Using this measurement it calculates number of calories that an individual burns at rest in a day*. This technique is called Indirect Calorimetry. This information assists in nutritional assessment and medical nutrition Therapy. The Reevue is simple to use and provides on-screen and printed results in just 10 minutes. The printout is ideal for maintaining records and will help the clinician and patient to understand the results of the test. The Reevue is lightweight and portable. It does not require a computer or manual calibration. The Reevue provides an accurate method for measuring VO2 (oxygen consumption) and RMR* (resting metabolic rate) Indications for Use The Reevue can be used for any patient where a measurement of metabolic rate or oxygen uptake (VO2) will be useful, including weight management and nutritional assessment services. Features Accurate – The Reevue has been validated against the clinical standard metabolic cart and has demonstrated equivalent accuracy in resting volunteers for both oxygen consumption and resting energy expenditure. Ease of Use – When the Reevue is turned on, it automatically calibrates and is ready to use. After the test is completed, results are presented on the display screen and are printed directly to an optional printer. No computer or software is needed to operate the Reevue. Affordable – the Reevue is priced at only a fraction of the cost of a standard metabolic cart. Reevue FAQ How does Reevue compare to hand-held indirect calorimeters? The Reevue is a traditional metabolic cart that has been tailored for Resting Energy Expenditure. By removing the features that accommodate ventilators and CO2, the cost has been reduced without sacrificing quality. Hand held devices are better suited for applications where clinical accuracy is not critical. Even though hand held devices may be a less expensive
initial investment, the cumulative cost of operation must be considered. Reevue
is the lowest cost indirect calorimeter to own, operate, and maintain. In part,
this is because Reevue does not limit the number of tests each unit will perform
and because Reevue uses standard respiratory fittings that don’t require you
to buy proprietary disposables. How does the Reevue measure metabolic rate? The human body consumes a fixed amount of oxygen per calorie burned. The Reevue measures the amount of oxygen the patient's body is consuming. Based on the measured oxygen consumption rate, the Reevue then calculates the Resting Energy Expenditure1 (REE). Or, in other words, exact amount of calories that person is burning. What are the steps of a Reevue test? The Reevue automatically calibrates itself, so there is no need to configure the unit prior to each test. First, ask the patient to relax in a seated or reclining position. The patient then breathes into a mask or mouthpiece for about 10 minutes. When the test is complete, the Reevue prints a detailed report of the results. Perhaps the simplest indirect calorimeter ever built! What is the difference between BMR and resting metabolic rate (RMR)? BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. BMR is a Resting Energy Expenditure test with a strict protocol to prepare the patient for the test. Therefore, the results from the Reevue can be interpreted as BMR if the protocol is followed. The protocol has requirements regarding sleep, exercise, and fasting prior to the test, and temperature and lighting during the test. What is the difference between REE and RMR? These terms are essentially the same. REE stands for Resting Energy Expenditure. RMR stands for Resting Metabolic Rate. Both indicate the amount of energy a person burns at rest, and can be used interchangeably. For what patients is the Reevue contraindicated? The Reevue is not intended for use on ventilated patients, patients unable to tolerate being off supplemental oxygen for 20 minutes, or where an RQ is required. This was done to keep the product simple and affordable for caregivers that simply require an accurate Resting Energy Expenditure for determining caloric requirements. What kind of patient connection does Reevue require? Reevue can be used with a disposable mouthpiece or a disposable mask. It uses standard respiratory fittings to accommodate a variety of hoses and reusable masks.

Since true VO2max measurements require exercising to the maximum level of exertion, they should only be done under medical supervision, or by persons who have been cleared to exercise extreme exertion by their physician. Peak VO2, or the maximum level of oxygen uptake achieved during a sub-maximal test can also be used to predict the VO2 max had the test been allowed to progress to the predicted maximum heart rate.
Knowing the unique anaerobic threshold can be used to design a workout plan that will improve fitness and maximize calories burned. Measurement of VO2max or PeakVO2 will provide a true assessment of fitness level. The CardioCoach test will provide all of this data
