Sports Nutritionists Legitimized Through National Regulation

The Latest Generation of Health Professionals

February 1, 2000 -- Certified Public Accountants have their exams.  Lawyers have the BAR exam.  Doctors have their medical boards.  The newest nationally regulated health professionals, sports nutritionists, now have to be reviewed annually to ensure the proper care of people seeking advice concerning changes in body composition or athletic performance.  A licensed sports nutritionist must maintain a minimum standard of continued education as well as counseling hour minimums each year in order to be recognized by the National Association of Sports Nutrition. The Association was created to regulate counselors who give advice or develop specific plans including nutrition, exercise and supplementation for the purpose of promoting health, wellness and optimal body composition.

Candidates for the title of sports nutritionist include dieticians, physicians, nurses, pharmacists and  personal trainers.  The health and fitness professional must show proficiency in human physiology, biochemistry and cellular biology before being licensed.  The NASN holds board exams three times a year.  The new board exams ensure licensed nutritionists demonstrate proficiency through written and oral evaluation.
