NASN Recommends Fitness Background and Education Before Licensing

The Latest Generation of Sports Nutritionists are Smarter, More Innovative and More Skilled.

February 22, 2000  -- Science and medical research have consistently led us  to two basic premises for health and longevity.  First we need to be active not sedentary. Second, we should eat specific quantities of nutritious foods.  These are not only successful means of disease prevention, but also specific therapy for the treatment or reversal of existing conditions.  The modern obstacle  is how to get the specific recipe of activity and food that brings a person's body to that disease free energetic machine it was meant to be.

Medical science has centered itself around the treatment of disease.  The fitness industry is still shrouded in a veil of "guruism" looking for that magic pill or exercise that will transform the body simply and conveniently.  The diet and supplement industries continue to grow rapidly while obesity and related hypokinetic illnesses increase at an even faster rate.  The infomercial as well as the resident "muscle head" at the local "super-gym" have failed us and they will continue to fail use as long as there is someone willing to pay them.

Out of the basic need for specific exercise and nutrition advice a new, innovative health professional has evolved to provide specific scientific recommendations concerning exercise, nutrition and supplementation.  This counselor is an impartial expert schooled in legitimate research and licensed to discern fact from fiction and the marketing hype from legitimate products.  The National Association of Sports Nutrition is an organization whose purpose is to guide professionals for license in sports nutrition.  These health and fitness professionals are the sophisticated diet coach, personal trainer and supplement expert all rolled into one.  Gurus they are not.  They are the new health professional of the millennium.  The NASN obligates their sports nutritionists to administer only clinical nutritional evaluations.  Any medical condition arising from this evaluation is referred to the appropriate healthcare professional.  Every recommendation given to clients by licensed sports nutritionists should be reviewed by the client's general physician.  The future of healthcare may include a licensed sports nutritionist as part of your medical staff.  The need for professional experts in nutrition and exercise to apply their knowledge to a specific patient's condition is definitely here.  NASN sports nutritionists are  exercise physiologists and nutritionists applying both sciences, complimenting each other.
