Note to United States candidates: Twenty-seven of the forty-one States with laws governing dietetics require licensure, thirteen require certification, and one requires registration. Since practice requirements vary by State, interested candidates should determine the requirements of the State in which they want to work before sitting for any exam. Dieticians are not licensed sports nutritionists unless they have been licensed by the National Association of Sports Nutrition. Licensed sports nutritionists are not dieticians unless they have been registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). National Association of Sports Nutrition Board ExamsThe NASN Board of Trustees is an administrative independent body established in order to examine and license in human sports nutrition. The NASN is an outgrowth of five years work to provide standards for and implement a three-fold program of licensing:- First, quality examinations were created and validated to appropriately represent the field of Sports Nutrition.- Second, national licenses are provided for sports nutritionists by successful completion of the board sports nutrition examinations. These licenses enable licensed sports nutritionists to access the entire scope of sports nutrition practice.- Third, a mechanism for license renewal annually, thus providing assurance of continued competency in the field.In order to attain licensure as a sports nutritionist, a candidate must:1.Satisfy the CORE Requirements for the license or certification (include all that apply)a. Be sure to send a certified copy (transcripts or grades) of all college science courses taken and currently enrolled.b. Send/e-mail documentation of current health professional certification. Include references stating years experience as a certified health professional directly involved in nutritional counseling, health promotion or healthcare. This includes all regulated health disciplines, such as certified holistic health practitioners, certified personal trainers and certified fitness instructors.2. Attend an NASN Board Exam.Once you have met the requirements and been granted candidate status, it is best to attend an exam preparation class before attempting the board exam.
